How Blackberry Hearing Is Using AI to Make Hearing Care More Accessible
Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the way we interact with technology, and at Blackberry Hearing, we’re exploring how it can make the journey to better hearing simpler, more accessible and more personalised.
As an Irish-owned hearing care provider with more than 60 clinics and outlets nationwide, Blackberry Hearing has been investing in data, analytics and digital transformation for several years. That investment is now helping us introduce AI across different parts of the customer journey, while continuing to put our audiologists and personal care at the centre of what we do.
Introducing Áine: Our AI Customer Assistant
One of the latest developments at Blackberry Hearing is Áine, our AI-powered customer assistant.
Áine has been developed to help customers navigate the hearing care journey, from an initial question or concern through to connecting with an audiologist.
She can help customers understand whether they may need a hearing assessment, find information about hearing aids, pricing, grants, warranties and aftercare, and access appointment information.
Importantly, Áine can connect with live clinic availability across our network, helping customers find and book suitable appointments in real time.
The aim isn’t to replace the personal element of hearing care. Instead, AI can help remove some of the friction involved in accessing information and getting the right support.
AI Behind the Scenes
AI is also being developed to support our team behind the scenes.
Known internally as Gráinne, this technology is being designed to help our wider team identify which customer enquiries need attention first.
The ambition is for Áine and Gráinne to work together over time, helping make sure enquiries reach the right member of our team at the right time.
This is an important part of our approach to AI: using technology where it can genuinely improve the customer experience and help our team work more efficiently.
AI Is Also Transforming Hearing Aids
AI isn’t only changing the way people access hearing care. It is also becoming increasingly sophisticated within modern hearing aids.
At Blackberry Hearing, we offer advanced hearing technology from leading manufacturers, including Widex and Philips.
One of the latest additions to our range is the Widex Allure 440 AI, which incorporates AI-assisted sound personalisation and sophisticated sound classification.
The technology can analyse the listening environment and adapt sound processing accordingly, helping distinguish speech from surrounding sounds.
Features such as Widex PureSound, adaptive feedback control, Bluetooth connectivity and rechargeable battery technology are designed to provide a more natural and convenient listening experience.
What does AI in a hearing aid actually mean?
For the wearer, much of the technology happens automatically.
A modern AI-powered hearing aid can respond to changes in the surrounding environment, whether you’re having a conversation at home, walking outdoors or sitting in a busy restaurant.
The goal is simple: to make listening clearer, more comfortable and less demanding.
Rather than constantly adjusting settings manually, intelligent hearing technology can make adjustments based on the environment and the wearer’s needs.
Technology That Supports People, Not Replaces Them
While AI is becoming a bigger part of hearing care, the role of the audiologist remains central.
At Blackberry Hearing, our audiologists use professional expertise and advanced diagnostic technology to assess each person's hearing and understand their lifestyle, communication needs and preferences.
AI can help make information easier to access and streamline parts of the customer journey. It cannot replace the clinical assessment, professional judgement or personal relationship between an audiologist and their customer.
Our approach is therefore about finding the right balance between technology and human expertise.
The Future of Hearing Care
The development of AI across Blackberry Hearing is part of a wider investment in technology, data and the customer experience.
As AI continues to evolve, we believe it has the potential to make hearing care more accessible, responsive and personalised — while giving our audiologists more time to focus on the part of the journey where human expertise matters most.
For us, the purpose of AI is not simply to introduce new technology. It is about using technology where it can make a genuine difference to our customers and our team.
