Can music really help Tinnitus?
Tinnitus affects around 15% of people in Ireland and the UK and can be a severely debilitating condition.
Tinnitus is a ringing or noise in the ears or head when no such external noise or ringing is present. It is most often caused by long term exposure to noise and, whilst there are ways to manage the condition, there are no permanent cures.
For many sufferers, it is a persistent problem and can affect work, sleep, relationships and the overall quality of life.
Whilst there are no permanent cures for Tinnitus, some of the solutions for managing the problem may surprise you.
Researchers in Germany have found that by editing music to remove the sounds played at frequencies that correlate with Tinnitus, the music can be enjoyed for long periods and will actually improve the overall experience of the Tinnitus – mostly reducing the ringing in the ears!
Based on this, there are now widely available playlists online that have been specifically developed for Tinnitus sufferers. These playlists combine soothing music, ambient noise such as ‘white noise’ and sounds of nature including soft rain, thunderstorms and ocean sounds.
It has been found that these sounds can drown out the ringing in the ears that is often associated with Tinnitus and will also provide comfort and relaxation during those frustrating periods of Tinnitus flare up.
Once you find which sounds best alleviate your Tinnitus symptoms, it is recommended that you listen to the playlist for long periods, even whilst sleeping or meditating.
However, where Tinnitus is a symptom of Hearing Loss, these playlists may help alleviate the ringing in your ears, but the longer term issue of hearing loss needs to be addressed.
Just because you have Tinnitus, does not mean you have hearing loss, but equally it is important to know if your symptoms are just Tinnitus or if it is a symptom of the bigger problem of hearing loss.
If you have had a protracted period of ringing in your ears, why not make an appointment to see one of our BSc trained audiologists for a FREE hearing test to find out whether your Tinnitus is just that or is a symptom of hearing loss.
